while I do not need much to tell me Lars is a piece of crap, I read this this morning and wasn't surprised. This is why that was the end of it for my love for them. Master of Puppets, Kill em All, Ride the Lightning, all great, and Justice should have been just as great, if it weren't for politics within the band. Later it was the bands politics outside the band that sealed the deal.
Keep Metallica metal, not some shitty group of narcissists with mouths bigger than brains

I agree, although I still love the black album.
Makes you wonder if anything would have been different if Cliff hadn't died.

that is something asked many times, and it aint ever going to happen so I dont dwell on it.
Black album was pretty good, though I had moved my tastes more to punk and ska by that time, and Helmet was sounding better than Metallica. Still solid though

They've all been arseholes at some point or another. I still love their stuff (except 90% of St Anger of course).

Ehhhh. As much as I like the bass-added versions of the songs, I think the missing bass is a big part of the character of the original. I wouldn't even call this the biggest atrocity in the band's carrer - That goes to the Lou Reed collaboration / musical abortion, followed closely by all of Death Magnetic.

not all genres of music are defined by bass guitar.
I played bass for years and almost all rock bands wanted essentially a percusive 120/90 BPM (or really 82) metronome. Be felt, but not heard or distinguished.
Lars didn't seem like a drummer who really branched out. Most drummers I played with loved playing jazz or funk with me on our practice breaks. The guitarists usually had no idea what to do, so we would wrap up and go back to playing death metal or whatever.
Bass players are in short supply, so in a few years I got to work with a lot of different bands. In live shows your job is essentially to "keep the family together", as a lot of the people I worked with had a wandering time problem. You play the middle man and ride root with fifths and sevenths. Anything busier and guitarist would generally complain they were losing the cohesion of the song.

Now it has too much bass.
However it is nice to hear the bass line now.

Yeah, it would be nice to hear a studio-quality remaster.

Of every person who plays a bass guitar, I wonder why they picked it up:
Did they pick it up because they were a guitar player who saw nothing but "bass player wanted" ads on the music store bulletin board?
or are they someone who actually wanted to play bass.

Doesn't mean I'm still not listening to it. :)
That was a great record, but I never liked the way it was mixed. Too much kick drum, too much mid range.
I'm going to have to go find the fill album on YouTube now of the whisper-bass version.

i started with rock playing in my uncles band, then after Katrina(hurricane) we had an influx of blues/funk/jazz musicians displaced in Tx. Playing with them opened my eyes to this limitless potential of the instrument and actually being in an environment to flex your bass skills is a lot of fun.
Playing in the rock/punk genre made me bored, so I picked up keyboard, drums, cello!, and a few other string instruments. Playing with jazz/blues/funk inspired me to buy a fretless bass guitar.
It is common for people playing bass to pine for guitar, but I've never been too interested in the 6 string.
